Novanta, a global technology leader, identified the need for a modern, consolidated facility in Stockport to streamline its laser manufacturing operations. To achieve this, ADT Workplace designed and delivered an impressive 70,000 sq. ft. facility at Orion Business Park. This new, state-of-the-art facility now quadruples Novanta’s advanced laser manufacturing capacity, whilst providing employees with an engaging, modern working environment for its employees. The facility is designed with high levels of flexibility and the latest technologies to support Novanta’s further growth in the UK.

Project Goals: Innovation, Efficiency, and Wellbeing

Novanta’s objectives for the project were clear and ambitious. They aimed to:

Consolidate their teams into a single location to improve operational efficiency.
Streamline manufacturing processes for greater speed and efficiency.
Construct cleanrooms and advanced laboratories for laser assembly.
Create wellness spaces to support the health and engagement of employees.
Ensure the facility could scale with the business and increase production capacity.

The design needed to balance cutting-edge technology with features focused on employee wellbeing.

Design Highlights

ADT Workplace collaborated closely with Novanta to create a space that is both modern and functional. Key features include:

Clean Manufacturing Zones: Two-thirds of the facility is dedicated to cleanroom manufacturing, essential for laser assembly and other high precision processes.
Robotic Storage Systems: Automated elevator storage systems connect the floors, significantly enhancing operational efficiency. These systems were customised to meet Novanta’s specific needs.
Collaborative Workspaces: All offices and open plan areas feature flexible layouts, meeting spaces, and modern technology to support global teamwork.
Employee Wellness Spaces: The facility includes a restaurant, gym, and quiet relaxation rooms. Outdoor gardens provide additional space for employees to unwind, promoting satisfaction and work-life balance.
First-Floor Mezzanine: A mezzanine was added to expand manufacturing space and integrate it with ground-floor operations.

Challenges and Solutions

The project presented several unique challenges, which ADT Workplace addressed through close collaboration with Novanta:

Building a Mezzanine: This required meticulous planning to ensure safe and effective integration.
Designing Cleanrooms: These large, highly specialised spaces required advanced systems to meet manufacturing requirements,
Linking Storage Across Floors: The automated storage system was customised to seamlessly connect two levels of the facility, optimising material flow through the production process.
Fire Safety Requirements: ADT Workplace worked with fire officers and specialists to ensure all safety regulations were met.

A Collaborative Design Process

To fully understand Novanta’s needs, ADT Workplace conducted an in-depth analysis of the organisations existing operations. This included:

Using these insights, ADT Workplace proposed improvements to workflows and facility layouts, resulting in a design that boosts efficiency and simplifies workflow for the team.
