ADT Workplace transformed a Grade II listed building into a high-tech, modern office space for Couchbase.
Couchbase is a US-based database software company. As a key location for the organisation, its Manchester office needed to support a growing team. Therefore, Couchbase wanted a workplace that could serve the business for at least the next five years.
The company was keen to remain in Manchester’s historic Northern Quarter. As a result, Couchbase agreed a tenancy at 35 Dale Street. The building offered character, history and potential. However, it also brought a number of design and delivery challenges.
Creating a Modern Workplace in a Listed Building
Couchbase needed a modern space with strong connectivity and high-tech infrastructure. In addition, the office had to include open-plan desk space for up to 80 staff.
The brief also included a large communal area, private spaces for relaxation, and areas for quiet concentration. Meeting spaces with integrated technology were also vital. These spaces needed to support collaboration with colleagues at other office locations around the world.
Although the building had unusual features, Couchbase was keen to retain its character. Therefore, our design approach focused on making the most of the original details, while creating a practical workplace for a fast-growing technology company.
Making the Most of 35 Dale Street
35 Dale Street is a Grade II listed building. Because of this, Couchbase wanted to incorporate original features into the new office design.
ADT Workplace worked closely with Couchbase to create a series of quirky and interesting design concepts. These ideas helped bring the team’s vision to life. They also made strong use of the unusual space.
For example, the cobbled double-height loading bay became the office entrance. This area still includes the original hoist and coal chute. Meanwhile, the core walls within both main office areas feature glazed brick. Some of the original signage also remains throughout the office.
As a result, the finished workplace combines historic character with the needs of a modern technology business.
Supporting Flexible and Agile Working
The new Couchbase office includes spaces for informal, formal and quiet work. Therefore, the team can choose the best setting for each task.
The large communal area also gives staff more space to come together. This has created a more comfortable and relaxed setting for collaboration. In addition, the private and quiet spaces support focus when needed.
This balance was important for Couchbase. The team needed a workplace that could support daily work, global communication and future growth.
A Workplace Designed Around Connectivity
For Couchbase, technology was a key part of the brief. The business needed a high-tech office with strong infrastructure and meeting spaces that supported global collaboration.
Therefore, the design had to connect the Manchester team with colleagues in other office locations. Integrated meeting room technology helped achieve this. It also made the workplace more practical for a business with international operations.
At the same time, the design needed to feel welcoming and distinctive. By using the building’s original features, ADT Workplace helped create an office with a strong sense of place.
