Project Overview

ADT Workplace partnered with The Instant Group to design and deliver a 39,688 sq.ft. office transformation for the UK’s leading telecoms business, BT. This project was part of a nationwide workplace transformation programme, aimed at creating a flexible workspace in Liverpool’s iconic Plaza building. The transformation was completed in 11 weeks, providing a model that BT could potentially roll out across its other UK offices.

The Vision

BT wanted to create a modern, inclusive Liverpool office with a focus on employee wellbeing. In addition to traditional desks, the office needed quiet rooms and stand-up meeting spaces. It also required areas for informal collaboration, relaxation, and social interaction. Consequently, BT and The Instant Group trusted ADT Workplace to bring their vision to life. As a result, the modern office design prioritises both comfort and productivity, offering employees flexibility and choice in their work environment.

The Transformation

Throughout the six-month collaboration with BT and The Instant Group, we ensured the design was innovative and agile. As a result, we created a workspace that met BT’s long-term needs and aligned with their workplace strategy.
The new BT office features several ‘neighbourhoods’ that offer a variety of flexible workspaces and breakout areas. Each space was designed to cater to the personal needs of employees. Moreover, the absence of directional signage allows staff to navigate the office seamlessly, which improves both agility and productivity.
Although BT’s branding is visible throughout the office, lounge areas without corporate branding were created to allow employees to relax and disconnect from work. Additionally, strategically placed refreshment points provide informal spaces where employees can take a break.

Technical Considerations

When it comes to technical aspects, ensuring data security was a top priority for BT. Therefore, all M&E systems were aligned with BT’s strict procedures. In addition, new data cabling and fibre connections were installed to meet security and operational standards. As a result, the office was future-proofed to meet both security and efficiency requirements.

Employee-Centric Design

The redesign of the BT office was centered on employee wellbeing and job satisfaction. By offering different types of workspaces, the new office not only boosts daily productivity but also fosters a more positive workplace culture. Employees are now free to choose between a quiet area for focus or an agile workspace for collaboration.

Challenges and Successes

One of the major challenges during the project was the COVID-19 pandemic. During the 11-week fit-out, work was briefly paused while ADT Workplace implemented Covid-secure measures. These measures ensured the safety of all workers and allowed the project to resume and finish on time.

Commenting on the project, the Senior Project Manager at The Instant Group said: “The ADT Workplace team was brilliant to work with and the space delivered far beyond our expectations. I’m confident that the new workspace will be transformational for the business in terms of improved employee wellbeing and office culture, as well increased productivity and talent attraction and retention.”

The BT office in Liverpool’s Plaza building demonstrates how innovative design can significantly enhance both employee wellbeing and productivity. By focusing on flexible workspaces and creating an agile workspace, ADT Workplace provided BT with a modern office that meets their evolving needs.
