CREATING A HIGH-CLASS, FLEXIBLE WORKPLACE FOR TAYLOR WESSING

Project Overview

ADT Workplace proudly delivered a comprehensive office design and fit-out for the international law firm Taylor Wessing. The project was located in a 13,000 sq.ft. space at Edward Pavilion, a Grade I Listed building in Liverpool’s iconic Royal Albert Dock. Completed in 13 weeks, the fit-out aimed to create a high-class workspace that reflected the standards of Taylor Wessing’s existing London office, while also embracing the unique historical features of the new Liverpool location.

Edward Pavilion, a UNESCO World Heritage site, presented a unique opportunity to merge contemporary workplace design with historical architecture, delivering a modern, functional environment in a prestigious setting. The project sought to create a highly flexible and agile working space that was tailored to the firm’s growing team and their operational needs.

The Vision

Taylor Wessing wanted to create an environment that would reflect the firm’s core values and professional reputation. This meant ensuring that the office design seamlessly blended the company’s identity with the architectural heritage of Edward Pavilion. ADT Workplace collaborated closely with project managers at Hollis and designers from Kin to develop a solution that embodied the brand while remaining sensitive to the historical significance of the building.
The objective was not just to create a working environment but to design a space that exuded the same level of quality as their London office. This was particularly important because Taylor Wessing was relocating from a co-working space and needed a dedicated workplace that would inspire productivity, employee well-being, and client engagement.

Additionally, the firm wanted the design to reflect its commitment to sustainability and innovation. Therefore, the project team was tasked with ensuring that the workspace would be efficient, comfortable, and reflective of Taylor Wessing’s standing in the legal sector.

The Transformation

The newly designed office space offers a variety of agile working environments, allowing employees to choose the setting that best suits their daily tasks. These include formal desks for focused work, meeting booths for collaboration, and casual areas designed for informal conversations. Each area is strategically designed to maximise flexibility, enabling team members to move fluidly between different working styles throughout the day.

Breakout spaces were also a major feature of the design, helping to foster greater collaboration between team members. These areas offer a more relaxed atmosphere where employees can gather, exchange ideas, and work together in a productive yet informal setting. This flexibility is essential for a fast-paced international law firm like Taylor Wessing, where the ability to adapt to different tasks is crucial for success.
Rich textures and luxurious finishes were integrated into the office design to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The combination of oak chevron floors and the soft lines of hanging textiles contrasts beautifully with the industrial backdrop of brick and steel beams, creating a distinctive aesthetic.
Furthermore, Taylor Wessing’s sponsorship of the National Portrait Gallery’s ‘Photographic Portrait’ awards and ‘Hold Still’ exhibition inspired the integration of unique artwork throughout the space. These pieces, used as wayfinding features, not only add a cultural dimension to the office but also reinforce the firm’s commitment to art and philanthropy.

Challenges and Solutions

Delivering the project during the pandemic posed significant challenges, particularly with regard to health and safety measures. The fit-out took place on the top floor of a Grade I Listed building, meaning that special considerations had to be made to preserve the building’s historical features. Moreover, working in such a prestigious location required careful planning and coordination, as other fit-outs were being undertaken within the same building.
ADT Workplace, in close partnership with Hollis and Kin, managed to navigate these challenges by maintaining constant communication and collaboration with all project stakeholders. Despite the complexities involved, the project was delivered on time and within budget.

Additionally, Taylor Wessing decided midway through the project to target a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ sustainability accreditation. This decision required adjustments to the HVAC, acoustics, and other systems to ensure that they met the performance criteria necessary for this rating. ADT Workplace responded quickly to these new requirements, incorporating energy-efficient solutions and ensuring that the office would achieve the desired sustainability goals without compromising on quality or design.

Outcome

The newly transformed office not only meets Taylor Wessing’s operational needs but also showcases the historical charm of Edward Pavilion. The blend of modern functionality with the building’s original features has created a workspace that leaves a lasting impression on both employees and visitors. The relocation from a co-working space in Liverpool’s city centre to this purpose-built environment has provided the firm with a dedicated, high-quality workplace designed to support future growth.
In addition to the stunning interior design, the space is equipped with all the modern amenities needed to enhance employee well-being and productivity. From the versatile workstations to the open collaboration zones, the new office is set to deliver significant business benefits, improving client interactions and team dynamics.
David Clemetson, co-founder of ADT Workplace, commented: “Delivering this project to the high standards required, during a pandemic, and in a Grade I Listed building, was a challenge. However, by working in true partnership with the project team, we were able to deliver a workspace that enhances both business operations and employee well-being. It is definitely a workplace to be proud of, and we are confident it will serve Taylor Wessing well in the years to come.”
