Are you a detail-driven finance professional looking to grow your career in a dynamic and supportive office design and build construction business?
We’re looking for an Accounts Assistant to join our busy Finance Department — helping to keep our numbers accurate, our ledgers up to date, and our projects running smoothly.
About the Role
As an Accounts Assistant, you’ll play a vital part in maintaining the financial heartbeat of the business. You’ll be responsible for processing invoices, managing both sales and purchase ledgers, and ensuring all financial transactions are handled accurately and efficiently.
You’ll collaborate closely with colleagues across the business — from project managers and quantity surveyors to directors and suppliers — to make sure everything runs seamlessly behind the scenes.
Key Responsibilities
Sales Ledger
- Authorise and process customer invoices, applications for payment, and retentions in line with construction contracts.
- Record and allocate customer receipts correctly.
- Prepare monthly statements and chase overdue accounts.
- Liaise with project managers and surveyors to ensure invoices are issued accurately and on time.
- Monitor retention schedules and ensure prompt collection.
- Maintain up-to-date sales records and resolve payment discrepancies.
Purchase Ledger
- Process supplier and subcontractor invoices, ensuring accurate coding to projects and cost centres.
- Match invoices to purchase orders and verify CIS compliance.
- Prepare supplier and subcontractor payments (BACS).
- Reconcile supplier statements and resolve queries.
General Accounting Support
- Assist with bank reconciliations, journals, and VAT/CIS submissions.
- Support month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Maintain accurate financial records for audits and reporting.
- Provide general administrative support to the Finance Team.
What We’re Looking For
Experience & Knowledge
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a finance role (essential)
- Construction industry background and knowledge of CIS/Reverse VAT (desirable)
Skills & Abilities
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Excellent organisational and time management skills
- Confident communicator who builds positive relationships at all levels
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Excel)
- Experience with accounting software (e.g., COINS) – desirable
Qualifications
- AAT qualified or working towards (desirable)
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English, grade 4 or above (desirable)
